Driveway Drinks: Rosé Aperol Spritz
Ah, Mother's Day. That magical day in the middle of May where you are finally allowed to plant flowers in the Midwest. And cards and flowers and maybe brunch (occasionally with in-laws, every mother's dream celebration) or an awkward breakfast in bed. I say this year, skip the breakfast-- head straight to the day drinks. For Mother's Day 2017: I give you the Rosé Aperol Spritz.
For those unfamiliar with a traditional Aperol Spritz, it's a low-alcohol aperitif of Italian origin that is practically begging to be sipped on a patio. The traditional drink is 3 parts prosecco, 2 parts Aperol (What the hell is Aperol? Glad you asked-- Aperol is a bitter herbal Italian aperitif much like the more popular Campari!), and a splash of club soda! Serve in a bit fat wine glass full of ice with an orange wedge preferably in the Italian countryside, but my backyard on a sunny Friday works just as well.
For this Mother's Day I turned to Rosé to satisfy my desire for a bouquet of flowers. Swapping out prosecco for Rosé (sparkling or not-- your choice), a DROP of rose water for a real floral kick, some Aperol and a top off of club soda and you have a refreshing, floral, springy, made-for-mom drink.
This drink is low alcohol and dangerously thirst quenching, which essentially means you can literally drink it all afternoon. You know-- in honor of Mom!
Do your mom a favor this weekend: Skip the flowers, make her a cocktail. Cheers!
Rosé Aperol Spritz
Makes 1 Cocktail, Multiply for as many Moms are in the room
Ingredients
4 oz (sparkling or not, your choice!)
2 oz Aperol
1/4 tsp rose water
3 oz (or just a top off of the glass you choose) club soda
Rose petal for garnish!
Method
Fill a large white wine glass with clear ice. Pour in rosé, Aperol, rose water, and club soda. Stir gently, top with petal and serve! Happy Mother's Day!
